It’s that time of year again, the 2017 Crossfit Open is upon us. You work hard at the box improving your skills, building endurance, and increasing weight; now it’s time to put all that work to the test. Whether you’re a veteran in this sport or still relatively new, here are a few important details you will need to know about the Open…..
What is “The Open”?
The Open is the first stage of the CrossFit Games season and the largest community event of the year. Every year, hundreds of thousands of athletes come together to compete in the worldwide, online competition.
It begins on Feb 23rd with the announcement of “Open WOD 17.1.” Every Thursday, for 5 consecutive weeks a new workout will be released via games.crossfit.com. These workouts must be completed and scores submitted by the following Monday @ 8pm.
Who can participate?
Anyone over the age of 14 can participate in the Open. There are several divisions such as youth, Rx, scaled, and masters that make the Open inclusive for almost anyone that wants to give it a go.
How do I sign-up?
It’s as easy as 1..2..3..Go…….. First, go to www.games.crossfit.com . Once you are there, simply click on “Register”. It’s as simple as that.
If you previously participated in the Open, you can sign into your account (via sign in tab) and your athlete profile will be saved from last year.
What is the cost?
There is a $20 registration fee
What do I put under the “affiliate” tab during registration?
Just type Verge Athletics into the drop down box.
Can we still participate even though Verge is not an official affiliate?
Absolutely! There are thousands of participants around the world who work out in their own garage or unaffiliated gyms (ie- OPEX). In order to be regionals eligible, a video (via link) must be submitted with each workout. These videos don’t have to be anything fancy, and can be taken on any phone or ipad.
*In year’s past, CrossFit didn’t “require” video submission for affiliates, but reserved the right to ask for any athlete’s video evidence at any time. This year, any athlete earning a regionals bid is required to have video evidence (affiliate or not).
Who will judge me for each workout?
Your very own Verge coaches.
What if I want to participate but I am not sure if the Open is right for me?
There are tons of reasons why people participate in the Open outside of wanting to be the next CrossFit games champ. You may just surprise yourself – whether it’s stringing together 10 double unders in a row for the first time, kipping TTBs or getting your first muscle up! You get to connect with thousands of people in our fitness community all achieving “firsts” at the same time. It brings a level of fun and yes, anxiety, that you can’t get from your everyday workout.
